What is Summer Screams Horror Festival?

Summer Screams is a film festival featuring short horror films from directors around the world.

Why shorts?

Traditionally, films too short for a theatrical release were considered a stepping stone to real filmmaking.  We view shorts as real filmmaking!  We believe great stories come in all lengths and being shorter doesn't make your movie any less.

Why do you stream online?

In the past short films were destined to only be seen by a few small audiences at a festival as the lead in to the feature just hoping somebody important would see your short, like your work, and offer you a real job directing a feature.  We recognize the value of shorts and believe great stories don't have to be 90 minutes long.

There is a market for shorts.  As technology has changed it's given us the opportunity to bring amazing work to a new larger audience.  By streaming the selections online we're able to introduce artists to horror lovers around the world.

How can I be a judge?

Our judges are picked by the festival director.  If you'd like to be considered contact us.

How do I watch the selections online?

All of selections will be streaming online via our YouTube channel

How long are the films

Summer Screams showcases short films with a maximum run time of 70 minutes.  Some are as short as 5 seconds.  Most are around 5-10 minutes.  We believe great stories are told in a variety of lengths.

Where can I submit my film?

Submissions for Summer Screams 2020 open October 1.  Check back here to submit your film.

Can I send you my film on DVD/Blu-Ray/VHS/Reel/Etc.

No.  We can only accept digital submissions online.

My film is a feature.  Is there a category for me?

This is a shorts only.  We accept films up to 70 minutes.

My film isn't in English.  Is that ok?

We accept films in any language.  If it isn't in English it must be subtitled.

How much does it cost to enter?

Entry fees vary based on when you submit.  Early bird submissions are free.  Last deadline submissions are $15.

I've blown my production budget and can't afford to enter.  Can I still get in free?

We do sometimes offer fee waivers.  Go ahead and ask

I can't have my film shown online.  Can I still enter for just the theater screening?

To introduce our artists to the largest audience possible all selections will stream as part of the online element of the festival.  We recognize that many festivals require a film not be available online until after that festival. Please consider this before submitting.  After official selections have been announced a film may not be withdrawn from the festival.  By submitting you agree that your film will be streamed online as part of the festival.

Does the festival have a premiere status requirement?

Nope.  It's perfectly fine if you're film has screened elsewhere.
